September was the beginning of my hunting season. Archery deer began at the very end of August and went through the beginning of September and dove season goes for two weeks starting on the 1st.
I went out for four nights up north of Prescott, AZ. I had a few spots where I had seen good size herds of deer in the past few years. Archery deer hunting in AZ is typically antlered deer only. Long story short, I saw 10 or so doe and only one buck. The buck was 300 yards away, across a canyon with a 100 foot drop. I hiked all over the place trying to find a way down to him but it was pointless. Given the heat and the fact that I was hunting alone, had I actually killed the animal the odds of me getting him out of there in a timely manner was slim so I chose to find a new spot.
Dove season got off to a slow start. I went to the same place as last year expecting the same result and it was quite the opposite. Not a single bird where I was. It’s all good though because by the end of the week my best friend was here and we killed it. I ended up with 15 birds. The problem I had this year is I didn’t do any scouting. Next year I’m going to make sure I get out there a couple of weekends prior to make sure I’m in a good spot for opening day and hopefully I’ll do better. Opening day this year I got one bird which is ridiculous. The next day I got two, then three, then eight. Oh, I’ll definitely get some target practice in before opening day as well. I had not shot my shotgun in a long time and it showed when birds finally started flying over. Miss after miss until I got back in my groove, then I slayed them!
- Dove – 15
- Deer – 0
- Coyote – 0
- Javelina – 0
October 1st quail season opens up so I will definitely be going out for that. Also in October I think it’s going to be good for coyote and fox just because it will finally be cooling off and they will be active more during the daylight hours. I know where a few kit fox and one or two gray fox are living so I’m going to try to get one with my bow. November should just be quail, coyote, and fox. December 11th is archery deer down here in the Yuma area so I will definitely go out for that. I’ll start scouting in October and watch over the two months to try to find a pattern to what they’re doing and see if they’re consistently hitting the same spots. The problem is that rifle season goes prior to that so there’s going to be a lot of pressure put on them before I’m able to hunt with my bow so we will see but I’ll let you know how it all ends up. That will take me to the end of the year and January will be javelina, deer, and quail. After that it’s back to 3D shooting.
This list will grow and I’ll cross them off as I get them but I’ll leave them on the list so I know what I’ve done. I’m always up for a challenge so if you have an idea let me know and maybe I’ll add it to the list.
- Kill a deer with my bow
- Kill a coyote with my bow
- Kill a fox with my bow
- Kill a black bear with my bow
- Kill an elk with my bow
- Kill a javelina with my bow
